Hangberg Hout Bay, a year after the riots

This is a video by @houtbayblogger of the 21 Septmber Riots in Hangberg Hout Bay in 2010.

The following article taken from eyewitnessnews.co.za/ Nathan Adams shows some progress is happening:

Hangberg residents sign peace accord,
Residents of Hangberg in Hout Bay and the City of Cape Town on Tuesday signed a peace and mediation accord over the areas redevelopment.

The agreement comes nearly a year after residents clashed violently with metro police who tried to evict them from the slopes of the sentinel.

Delon Egypt lost his eye when law enforcement officials shot at residents.

Earlier, he was seated next to Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille, signing a peace and mediation accord.

It is an agreement that includes a relocation process and housing development for the residents living within the fire break.

De Lille said it is a new beginning for the community.

The leadership group from Hangberg signed the agreement and maintained to build a prosperous future for their children.

Some stressed the agreement should not retract from the individual civil cases that are still pending, as the City has been served notices by about 20 individuals suing for personal injury.

Good news for Hangberg

Good news for Hangberg

Taken from eyewitnessnews.co.za:

The Hout Bay Civic Association on Tuesday said mediation efforts around the Hangberg eviction saga are proceeding well.

An independent mediator has been appointed to oversee the process.

The City of Cape Town, SANParks, the Hangberg community and the civic association agreed to enter into talks, rather than follow through with court action in a bid to defuse tensions.

Violence erupted in September 2010 after city officials took down shacks built in a fire break on the slopes of the Sentinel.

The civic association’s Greg Louw said they are currently in the process of introducing proper representation for the community, but he refused to name the mediator.

Angry crowd gives Zille the finger

This seems to be a recurring issue with the community of Hangberg and Council. This news item was produced two years ago.

“A crowd of angry Hout Bay residents shouted down Premier Helen Zille, gave her the middle finger and then came close to lunging at her on Friday night at a rowdy community meeting to discuss housing.”
