Hout Bay resident commentates for the visually impaired at the World Cup

Tom Purcell, a Hout Bay resident, has been hard at work at the World Cup soccer offering a unique service to visually impaired spectators.

This is a short description of the work he is doing:

Exciting news in the build up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. FIFA, the Swiss National Association
for the Blind (SNAB) and the South African National Council for the Blind (SANCB) have teamed-
up to provide an Audio Description Project at 44 matches in six of the 2010 FIFA World Cup
stadiums. The project which was initiated by the Swiss NAB is funded by FIFA and operated by the
SANCB.

Well done Tom!

Dozens of homes ruined in Mandela Park blaze

Remember this fire a few years ago..

Firefighters on Tuesday night battled a blaze which destroyed at least 100 homes in Imizamo Yethu in cold and rainy conditions.

Nearly two hours after the fire broke out, scores of firefighters were able to surround and contain the flames which had spread quickly through the Hout Bay informal settlement popularly known as Mandela Park.
