Hout Bay eviction case postponed till November

The Western Cape High Court today heard an application to have more than 50 shacks dismantled on the slopes of the Sentinel in Hout Bay.

The court has postponed the case until the 29th of November.

The court has urged the parties to spend the next few weeks mediating what has become an explosive issue.

SANParks has backed out of backing the evictions, Western Cape Premier Helen Zille stated that this move by SANParks was politically motivated.

Residents of Hout Bay came in their numbers today to protest outside the court, police and security guards tried to negotiate with the rowdy crowd.

Residents seek mediation over land dispute

Members of the Hangberg community in Hout Bay, led by churches in the area, have called on the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation to facilitate talks between the government and the embattled community. The parties are at loggerheads over land.

It has become a political see-saw of opinions in Hout Bay over the Hangberg Crisis. Todays march by the Hangberg community was lead by Cosatu and factions of the ANC. The protest continues down at the Hout Bay police station.
