People drown their dog in Hout Bay!

People drown their dog in Hout Bay!

790Tv received this from an active member of the Hout Bay community, this may distrub you!:

Yes – the dog is dead and whatever I say or do, will not reverse the tragic events that took place on Wednesday evening.

At about 19h15 Watchcon called for urgent assistance, they had received a report that a couple was trying to drown their dog, after it had been hit by a car in front of the Yacht Club in the harbour (apparently some misguided attempt to put the dog out of its misery).
As we were on our way to a restaurant in Hout Bay we decided to try and assist. We notified Watchcon and made our way to the harbour.

When we arrived I got out of our vehicle and approached a group of people standing near the water line in front of the Yacht Club. I approached a very tearful and clearly upset bystander and informed her that we had been requested to intervene and try to stop a couple from drowning their injured dog. She told me “its too late .. Its gone “.

As I looked to my left I saw a middle aged male and female at the waters edge, pulling a smallish dog by its hind legs out of the water. I told them that we had been asked by the HBNHW radio controller to try and stop them fro m committing  this barbaric and senseless act.

The man that had kept the dog under the water was immediately aggressive and the female owner of the dog was adamant that the dog’s injuries were too severe and that it was for the best.
It also emerged that the male, carrying out the “assisted suicide” was the one that knocked the dog over.
I asked them why they had not called a vet. I was told that they had called the vet and that he was not available, this had prompted them to drown the dog to stop it from suffering. We can only thank our lucky stars that it was not a child that had been knocked down.

The next morning I made a couple of phone calls and these confirmed my suspicions from the previous evening.

Yes – the vet had received a frantic call about a dog being hit by a car in the harbour. He told the caller to bring the dog to his practice so that he could euthanize the dog (humanely) if it was not salvageable.
The owner opted not to take the dog to the vet. Instead , she decided to drown it.

I was also told by the vet, that the dog was being beaten with a plank by the owner before the eventual drowning. I cannot confirm the beating, as I did not personally witness it, but I can certainly confirm that the male and the female owner wilfully and intentionally drowned the dog – who in their “expert” opinions was not salvageable.

I also called the SPCA to hear their point of view of this shocking behaviour. The SPCA is quite clear on this – it was a gross violation of the  Animal Protection Act and the killer/killers should be prosecuted.

The dog trusted the owner with its heart and soul and was killed with the very same hands that used to feed and pat it, no living creature deserves this kind of betrayal.
I don’t understand how you can look at yourself in the mirror? What if this had happened in the middle of the village? Would you have strangled the dog with your own hands or asked a motorist to drive over it again?

The time you wasted trying to “finish your pet off”, you could have driven to the vet  and he could have put it out of its pain humanely.

I hope the law finds these people and deals with them, as harshly as the torture they inflicted on an innocent animal.
