Fire on Karbonkelberg

Yet another fire in Hout Bay; this time on Karbonkelberg above the Hangberg community. Speaking to a local heights resident, 790Tv wa told the fire started at 18h30 and had spread way up the mountain in one hour.  Prior to this footage being filmed, helicopters were arriving to fight the flames.

The scene was very different to a few months back, when police moved in to remove illegal structures on the firebreak. Firefighters were welcomed, and firebreak residents were fortunate that the fire did not start lower down the slope or if the wind was blowing in a different direction.

What do you associate with Hout Bay? Chappies, Suikerbossie and Constantia Nek probably remind of weary bodies for cyclists or runners in the Pick n Pay/Argus Cycle race or the Two Oceans Marathon (for the uninitiated, Chappies is Chapman’s Peak); Hout Bay lies between these points of fortitude.  For tourists, Hout Bay is a pretty stopping point on the scenic, sea drive via Chapman’s Peak and Suikerbossie through to Cape Town.  Residents probably appreciate the economic benefits of both the above with the joy of peace and quiet in the off season!

Man injured in Hout Bay guest house robbery

A Hout Bay guest house resident was admitted to hospital in a critical condition after being stabbed during an armed robbery on Thursday.

Two men reportedly forced their way into the Valley Road establishment before demanding cash.

A struggled then ensued.

The police’s Tanya Lesch said, “The suspect fled the scene with the cellular phone and a cordless phone. No arrests have been made yet.”
